This legendary wine is the first made by Thys Louw after joining his father Tienie on Diemersdal. The fledgling young winemaker was only given access to eight rows of vines within a premium Sauvignon Blanc vineyard. Quality of fruit and the talent of the winemaker led to a captivating wine that has today become the stuff of legend, still made from those first eight rows.

An intense Sauvignon Blanc with concentrated aromas on the nose that follows through on the palate. The wine shows a strong core of minerality with a flinty elegance on the nose with a rounded mouth-feel with nectarine and kiwi, and balanced acidity on the finish. Diemersdal’s reputation for pushing the boundaries with Sauvignon Blanc is expressed in this innovative wine style.

After harvest, the juice for this wine was frozen at -20 degrees celsius and kept in this state for five months. It was then thawed and fermented in the heart of the Cape winter, producing a uniquely tropical style of Sauvignon blanc totally unique for South Africa.

Winemaker's Notes

A new world style of Sauvignon Blanc. The wine has intense aromas of gooseberries, tropical fruit and sweet-grapefruit with a core of minerality. The excellent natural acidity creates balance to the concentrated, rich mouth-filling texture.

The Diemersdal Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc was made in conjunction with Ben Glover Family Vineyards.

The Dillons Point area of Marlborough, New Zealand is renowned for producing stunning pungent wines of power, finesse and vibrancy. Characteristic tropical notes of granadilla, gooseberry and kiwi-fruit are harnessed by a firm, exuberant bracing freshness, a nervy edge and green citrus and tense minerality. The finish is cool and long, making for a memorable Sauvignon Blanc experience.

Wild Horseshoe Sauvignon Blanc

Over many decades, the vineyards at Diemersdal have been ploughed with horses and even up to today on rare occasions we find their horseshoes in the vineyards. The lucky finder takes them to our cellar, where they all hang to catch the good luck.

Deep dark chocolate encing cedar aromas appear first on the nose followed by waing notes of blackberry jam, cherry and cassis. The firm, well-structured palate features robust yet sweet tannins and a broad range of flavours ranging from black cherry and red fruits carried along by the richness of its oak and vanilla notes. It is long and smooth now, with an intriguing character that will connue to develop with years to come.

Thys Louw’s love of the white wines of Austria and his pioneering spirit led to Diemersdal making South Africa’s first wine from the Grüner Veltliner grape. Despite the administrative and bureaucratic challenges in getting the plant material into South Africa, the vineyards flourish on Diemersdal producing precise wines of which their homeland can feel proud.

A lemon-lime colour, inviting aromas of kiwi, stone fruit and lime with sweet melon, ripe pear and white pepper note. A medium bodied wine, with a concentrated palate and a long lingering and mineral finish.
