Winemaking:
The 2024 vintage showed the hallmark characteristics of the variety, with naturally high acidity and excellent colour concentration. Handpicked at 24.5° Balling, with a pH of 3.3 and total acidity of 8.9 g/L. The grapes were destemmed and crushed before fermentation in small 1-ton open vessels, with three daily punch-downs for gentle extraction of colour, tannin and flavour. Following fermentation, the wine was transferred to seasoned oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation was completed, followed by 12 months of barrel maturation.
Food pairing:
Well suited to rich, savoury dishes with tomato-based sauces.
About the Label:
Long before the present-day Thys Louw took his place in the family story, his great-grandfather, also named Thys Louw, grew up at Diemersdal alongside his sisters, Annette and Irené. In this photograph, the fourth-generation Thys sits proudly on horseback in front of the old butter-making building, which today forms part of the Diemersdal tasting room.
It is a joyful glimpse of childhood on the farm: a life shaped by family, animals, open spaces and the daily rhythms of the land. The photograph reflects the heart of Prospect, capturing one generation at the beginning of its journey and the legacy it would eventually pass on. Like the Barbera, the story is lively, expressive and deeply rooted in Diemersdal.
