Looking back on a year great success

At the end of 2018 we can reflect on a positive year for Diemersdal and for our region of the world – namely the Western Cape – in general. Worth sharing with you from the outset is that the drought that had ravaged the Cape for the past four years has abated.

We have had a real wet Cape winter that saw temperatures plummeting and the storm-clouds blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean – a truly great sight for anyone residing in this part of the world. Lo and behold, the wet winter has extended into the summer where the vineyards have received refreshing douses of rain during December. According to our vineyard teams, this has been an early Christmas present!

At this stage the vineyards are looking in fine fettle and we are anticipating a good, healthy harvest when the grape-pickers start cutting the bunches in January next year.

During 2018 Diemersdal Estate once again showed its mettle as one of South Africa’s most successful producers at wine shows, in competitions and in reports from renowned critics. It is also interesting to note that though being especially well-known for our Sauvignon Blanc range, Diemersdal’s red wines are garnering some of the country’s most renowned awards.

Some of the ratings we achieved this year were:

A FNB Top 10 Sauvignon Blanc Award for Diemersdal Winter Ferment 2018.
Another Absa Top 10 Pinotage Trophy for Diemersdal Pinotage Reserve 2017 – the seventh time Diemersdal has been awarded with one of these sought-after awards.
Four Gold Medals at the Veritas Wine Awards, South Africa’s leading wine competition with Gold going to Winter Ferment Sauvignon Blanc 2018, Pinotage 2016, Pinotage Reserve 2015 and Shiraz 2016.
At the Michelangelo International Wine&Spirits Awards Diemersdal put in a stunning showing winning one coveted Platinum award, three Double Gold and two Gold Medals.
The Platinum was awarded to the Diemersdal Pinotage Reserve 2016, while the sixth generation farm owned by the Louw family took Double Golds for its Private Collection 2016 Bordeaux blend, the Diemersdal Woolworths Reserve Collection Merlot Malbec 2017 and its Eight Rows Sauvignon Blanc 2018.
At the prestigious Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show Diemersdal Private Collection 2016 won the Riedel Trophy for Best Bordeaux-style Red Blend at this year’s prestigious Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.
British critic Tim Atkin MW once again published his report on South African wines and this year Diemersdal Estate achieved a 95pt score for its MM Louw Sauvignon Blanc 2017 in the highly anticipated 2018 wine report. The estate’s Wild Horseshoe Sauvignon Blanc 2017 was hot on the MM Louw’s heels with 94pts. Diemersdal also roped in a 94pt rating for its MM Louw Pinotage 2016.

These awards show a consistency in Diemersdal’s wine quality and underscore our unique Durbanville terroir, the commitment to unirrigated dryland farming which we believe provides optimum fruit quality and, of course, the skill and dedication of our cellar team under Thys Louw.

This time of year also affords me the opportunity to extend a heart-felt message of gratitude for the opportunity to continuing our business relationship with you. Mutual success can only be the result of good partnership, and from my side I would like to thank you for what you have done in making this relationship work for Diemersdal and hopefully for yourself as well.
We wish you a wonderful festive season and we look forward to seeing you in the new year.
